Lead Mechanical Design Engineer - Infrastructure Design Consultancy (Qatar)

Job Title: Lead Mechanical Design Engineer (Infrastructure)
Department: Engineering - Infrastructure Design
Location: Qatar
Reporting To: Engineering Manager / Design Manager


Job Purpose

The Lead Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for leading the mechanical design of infrastructure projects from concept through detailed design, ensuring compliance with Qatar regulations, international codes, client requirements, and project schedules. The role involves technical leadership, multidisciplinary coordination, client interaction, mentoring engineers, and ensuring high-quality engineering deliverables for water, wastewater, district cooling, utility, transportation, and mixed-use developments.


Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

• Lead the mechanical engineering design for infrastructure projects throughout concept, preliminary, detailed design, and tender stages.
• Develop innovative and cost-effective engineering solutions.
• Review and approve design calculations, drawings, specifications, BOQs, and technical reports.
• Ensure designs comply with Qatar Construction Specifications (QCS), local authority regulations, and international standards.
• Coordinate mechanical interfaces with civil, structural, electrical, architectural, and utilities teams.

Mechanical Design

Design and review mechanical systems including:

• Pumping Stations
• Water Transmission & Distribution Networks
• Wastewater Collection Systems
• Sewage Pumping Stations
• Stormwater Pumping Systems
• District Cooling Networks
• Utility Tunnels
• Fire Fighting Systems
• HVAC Systems for Infrastructure Buildings
• Building Services associated with Infrastructure Facilities
• Mechanical Equipment Selection
• Pressure Surge Analysis
• Pipeline Hydraulic Design
• Utility Corridors

Project Management

• Lead project teams and allocate engineering resources.
• Monitor project budgets and schedules.
• Ensure timely delivery of design packages.
• Conduct design reviews and value engineering workshops.
• Identify technical risks and propose mitigation measures.

Client & Stakeholder Management

• Attend technical meetings with clients, consultants, and government authorities.
• Present engineering solutions and design proposals.
• Support proposal preparation and technical submissions.
• Participate in design review meetings with Ashghal and other authorities.

Quality & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with:
  • Qatar Construction Specifications (QCS)
  • Ashghal Design Manuals
  • Kahramaa Requirements
  • Qatar Civil Defence Requirements
  • NFPA Standards
  • ASME Standards
  • API Standards (where applicable)
  • BS/EN Standards
  • ISO Standards
• Implement company QA/QC procedures.
• Review interdisciplinary coordination before issuing deliverables.

Team Leadership

• Lead and mentor mechanical engineers and CAD/BIM teams.
• Provide technical guidance and design reviews.
• Support competency development and performance evaluations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Mandatory)
• Master's Degree (Preferred)
• Chartered Engineer (CEng), PE, or equivalent professional registration is an advantage.

Experience

• Minimum 12-15 years of mechanical design experience.
• At least 5 years in a Lead Mechanical Engineer role.
• Extensive experience in infrastructure engineering consultancy.
• Strong experience delivering projects in Qatar or GCC.
• Proven experience on large-scale infrastructure developments.
• Experience with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
